The Radical Call of Discipleship

What is a Disciple?

The Greek word mathētēs means more than a student—it describes an apprentice who:

  • Follows a teacher’s footsteps (literally and spiritually)
  • Adopts their master’s way of life (Luke 6:40)
  • Reproduces the teaching in others (2 Timothy 2:2)

Jesus didn’t call us to make “converts” but fully-committed followers.

The Great Commission Blueprint (Matthew 28:18-20)

CommandPracticePromise
“Go”Intentional outreach (Acts 8:4)All authority backs you
“Baptize”Public identification with Christ (Romans 6:4)Trinitarian presence
“Teach obedience”Life-on-life training (Acts 2:42)Christ’s abiding presence

“By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”
— John 15:8

First Church Discipleship Model (Acts 2:42-47)

Their holistic approach included:

  1. Spiritual Foundations: Apostles’ teaching, prayer, communion
  2. Relational Investment: Breaking bread in homes
  3. Radical Generosity: Selling possessions for others’ needs
  4. Joyful Worship: Praising God with glad hearts

Result: Daily conversions through authentic community.

Modern Discipleship Essentials

To disciple like Jesus:

  • Be with Jesus: Start with your own transformation (Mark 3:14)
  • Make it reproducible: Teach simple, transferable practices
  • Embrace the cost: Real discipleship means taking up your cross (Luke 9:23)
  • Focus on fruit: Disciples make disciples (Matthew 13:23)

The Ripple Effect

One life fully surrendered to Christ can impact generations. As you:

  1. Follow (abide in Christ)
  2. Grow (be transformed)
  3. Multiply (invest in others)

you participate in God’s plan to reach the world—one disciple at a time.
